Can B-hyve Work Without Wi-Fi?
Can B-hyve work without Wi-Fi? Hose timers run by Bluetooth with no hub, but remote control and smart watering need a Wi-Fi hub or a Wi-Fi controller.
Yes, in a limited way. B-hyve hose timers can be set up and operated from a nearby phone over Bluetooth without Wi-Fi. Remote access, WeatherSense smart watering, weather delays and notifications need a matching hub. Sprinkler controllers have built-in Wi-Fi, and they keep running stored schedules when the internet drops on the models where Orbit documents this.
This is an independent B-hyve resource. B-hyve is made by Orbit.
What works over Bluetooth only?
Compatible hose timers (Gen 2 timers and XD timers) have Bluetooth built in. With a phone in range and the B-hyve app, you can:
- Set up the timer.
- Create and edit schedules.
- Run watering manually.
XD timers can also be programmed on the device itself, with no phone. Bluetooth gives local control only. It is not internet remote access.
What needs Wi-Fi?
For hose timers, a matching hub provides the Wi-Fi link. Through it you get:
- Remote control from anywhere.
- WeatherSense smart watering and automatic weather delays.
- Notifications.
- Watering history.
Orbit's listing says WeatherSense needs a Wi-Fi connection to provide schedules based on live weather feeds. Without a hub, the timer has no path to weather updates. See which hub works with my timer to pick the correct generation.
What happens when my internet goes down?
- Hose timers with a hub: Bluetooth control still works when you are close. Remote access and fresh weather data depend on the connection, so expect them to stop until it returns. Orbit's sources reviewed here do not describe schedule behavior during an outage for hose timers, so check your timer's manual.
- 57925 indoor controller: Orbit states that it keeps schedules in internal memory and continues running them during an internet interruption.
- Other controllers: do not assume the 57925 behavior applies. Check your model's manual.
A saved schedule is not the same as having power. A controller cannot open valves if it has no electrical power, even though it remembers the schedule.
Do sprinkler controllers need Wi-Fi?
They connect to Wi-Fi directly, with no hub, and they also have Bluetooth. The 57915 listing says Bluetooth allows local setup and management when Wi-Fi access is limited. Wi-Fi bands differ: the XR uses 2.4 or 5 GHz, while the other controllers use 2.4 GHz.
Do firmware updates need Wi-Fi?
Orbit support notes that some hose-end updates need the phone to stay within Bluetooth range. Do not assume every update can be completed remotely through the hub.
What should I buy if I have no reliable Wi-Fi at the faucet?
The hub sits indoors, not at the faucet. Orbit gives 150 ft as a setup guideline between hub and timers. Walls and metal reduce performance. If the faucet is too far from any Wi-Fi coverage, a Bluetooth-only setup is still usable. For XD timers you can program on the device. Hub-inclusive bundles are listed in the XD comparison.
